Years later, I found myself in one of the best technological research universities in the east coast, meeting wonderful new people and getting involved with a lot of things on campus. I’m “living in a big ol’ city” now, and have had the time of my life, filled with great success, joy and amazing people. I even won the Civic Engagement Award ‘12!

I take pride in these accomplishments, because for all those years that I was teased by classmates for who I was, I always thought that one day, I’d be someone. Now, I can say I am someone, and when they talk to me on Facebook and want to know what I’m up to, I smile knowing that I have stories to talk about, and “all they’ll ever be is mean”. They can’t really bully nor tease me now, because I’m “big enough so they can’t hit me”.

That’s the reason why when I first listened to the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s “Mean”, I sang it like it was my national anthem, because, in a way, it is.
